Detailed IONOS Review & Analysis by HostDean Experts
IONOS Hosting Review: Balanced Value and Mixed Performance
»IONOS Review Overview

Founded in 1988, IONOS—formerly known as 1&1 and 1&1 IONOS—has grown into a trusted global leader in web hosting. With decades of expertise under its belt, the German-based company has earned a stellar reputation for delivering budget-friendly hosting solutions.
Whether you need shared hosting, cloud hosting services, or a virtual private server (VPS), IONOS offers a diverse range of high-quality options that cater to every need. In this IONOS review, we’ll provide you with a comprehensive overview of the provider, covering all the key details you need to make an informed decision about IONOS hosting.
We at HostDean have examined IONOS with a detailed focus on its range of hosting services, infrastructure, and customer experiences. The provider has a long history in the hosting market and continues to evolve its offerings to meet modern website needs. Its global network of data centers offers potential for reliable service delivery, especially for small and medium-sized businesses.
Our tests at HostDean have shown that IONOS delivers acceptable performance levels on many of its hosting plans. However, the use of HDD storage on some packages, especially on shared Linux and ASP.NET hosting, can affect speed and responsiveness. This factor is important if you prioritize fast website load times and optimal server response.
The reliability of IONOS is reflected in its generally strong uptime records. The provider has invested in a robust network infrastructure to minimize downtime and ensure continuous service. There are instances where maintenance or technical issues have caused brief disruptions, but overall, the provider maintains competitive reliability metrics in the hosting market.
Pricing is a significant aspect of our review. IONOS offers competitive introductory rates that attract new customers, as you can see in the IONOS pricing section below. The value proposition is enhanced by a range of features included at no extra cost, such as free SSL certificates and backup options. However, renewal prices and potential additional fees for services that other web hosting providers often include free have raised concerns among some users.
Customer support is an essential component of any hosting service, and as shown above, IONOS offers 24/7 support through various channels, including phone, chat, and a knowledge base. Our experience and customer feedback reveal that while many support interactions are positive, some users have experienced delays and challenges in issue resolution. This mixed performance in support services suggests room for improvement in response times and cancellation procedures.
In terms of features, IONOS provides an array of tools and add-ons that cover the basic needs of website management. The control panel is user-friendly and integrates well with popular content management systems. The service also offers a website builder and migration tools, making it accessible to beginners and experienced users. Still, certain advanced features are limited by the underlying hardware in lower-tier plans and require extra fees.
Overall, our detailed review of IONOS below reflects a balanced perspective where strengths in reliability and pricing are offset by mixed performance in speed and support. The service is suitable for a wide range of customers, yet potential users should be aware of the differences in performance across various plans. Our assessment at HostDean remains impartial and is based on a combination of firsthand tests and careful review of customer feedback.
IONOS has built a reputation for providing essential hosting services that meet the demands of most small businesses and individuals. This IONOS review outlines the core aspects of its service, giving you a clear picture of what to expect. We aim to present an honest evaluation that highlights both the positive and negative aspects of the provider (take a look at the IONOS Pros & Cons section above for a short list).
IONOS Performance
Our expert's take on IONOS performance.
IONOS offers a broad range of hosting plans, and performance varies significantly depending on the chosen service level. In many of the higher-end packages, such as cloud hosting or dedicated servers, you should experience acceptable speeds and reliable server response times. These plans are equipped with modern hardware configurations that ensure websites load within a reasonable timeframe and that dynamic applications run efficiently.
However, in the case of shared hosting and ASP.NET hosting, the reliance on traditional HDD storage becomes a limiting factor. HDD storage is inherently slower when compared with SSD storage, which results in a noticeable delay in data retrieval and longer TTFB for websites hosted on these lower-tier plans. Many customers have reported that while the uptime remains high, the speed performance can be subpar when handling higher traffic volumes or running resource-intensive applications.
This inconsistency in performance creates a gap between the expectations set by the provider’s overall reliability and the actual user experience on certain plans. Moreover, testing conducted by us at HostDean has indicated that the average loading times can sometimes lag behind those offered by competitors who have moved to SSD or NVMe technology across all packages. The variability in performance metrics means that while businesses with modest needs might find the entry-level plans acceptable, those seeking to host more demanding applications or expecting high-speed interactions may need to opt for the higher-tier solutions.
The mixed performance is also compounded by occasional slow server response times during peak usage periods, which can impact overall website performance. In addition, the control panel and backend interfaces, while functional, can sometimes experience delays when managing website configurations and updates, further contributing to the performance issues on lower-tier plans. The design of the hosting environment, especially for shared hosting, seems to prioritize cost-effectiveness over state-of-the-art performance enhancements.
Overall, our tests of IONOS hosting’s performance highlight that while the company has made strides in delivering a stable hosting service, the reliance on old hardware in some packages limits its ability to consistently provide the fast, modern performance that many users expect. If you run a business where speed is critical, exploring alternative solutions or investing in the provider’s higher-tier plans may be necessary to achieve the desired outcomes. You should be aware of these nuances and consider their specific performance needs when choosing an IONOS plan.
IONOS Reliability
How reliable is IONOS? Our insights.
Reliability is critical for any hosting provider, and IONOS demonstrates a commendable record in maintaining stable service availability. The company has invested in a network infrastructure that spans multiple data centers in different regions. As mentioned above in the IONOS Server Locations section of this page, they have servers in Europe, the UK, and the United States. This distributed architecture helps mitigate localized issues and ensures that websites remain accessible even when some network segments undergo maintenance.
Many users have observed that IONOS consistently delivers high uptime percentages, which is crucial for businesses that rely on a continuous online presence. Scheduled maintenance and updates are managed with minimal disruption to the end users, and the provider typically offers clear communication about any planned downtime. In our experience, downtime has been limited to short maintenance windows that do not significantly affect overall website performance.
The redundancy built into the network plays an important role in sustaining high reliability. Data centers are equipped with backup power supplies and robust security measures that reduce the risk of unexpected outages. Additionally, IONOS employs monitoring systems that allow their technical teams to address any issues that arise.
Despite these strengths, there are reports from some users indicating brief periods of unplanned downtime. These instances are relatively rare when compared to the overall reliability of the service but still raise concerns for businesses that require absolute continuity. Some customers have also noted that during peak traffic times, the reliability of the connection can fluctuate slightly, although these instances are not widespread. The emphasis on reliability is evident in the provider’s service level agreements, which promise high uptime percentages with a 99.99% uptime guarantee and offer compensation in the event of significant downtime.
IONOS also provides regular performance reports and tools for customers to monitor their website performance, which adds a layer of transparency and accountability to the service. The commitment to maintaining a high standard of reliability has earned IONOS a solid reputation among many small to medium-sized enterprises.
While there is room for improvement, especially in addressing occasional unplanned interruptions, the overall reliability of the hosting service remains strong. Customers can expect their websites to remain online and functional with minimal interruptions. This dependable web hosting service makes IONOS a viable option for businesses that prioritize consistent accessibility and value a stable hosting environment. The reliability of IONOS is one of its standout features, and it continues to support a broad range of websites effectively, from personal blogs to large e-commerce platforms.
IONOS Pricing
Are IONOS's prices competitive? Here's our verdict.
When evaluating IONOS’s pricing structure, it becomes clear that the European web hosting provider offers attractive initial rates designed to appeal to new customers. The introductory offers for shared web hosting, cloud hosting, and VPS plans often come at a lower cost than those of many competitors, making IONOS one of the top providers of affordable web hosting and low-cost VPS servers. These low initial prices are supported by a range of features, such as free SSL certificates, a free domain for the first year, and basic website building tools, making the service appealing for small businesses and personal websites.
However, the true test of a hosting provider’s pricing lies in the renewal rates and additional fees that customers encounter once the introductory period ends. Many users here on HostDean have reported that the renewal prices can be significantly higher, which affects the overall value proposition. This pricing model is common among web hosting providers, yet it stands out with IONOS due to the noticeable jump in costs after the first term.
Additionally, while the base features are generous during the introductory phase, customers who require advanced functionalities or extra security measures may find that these enhancements come with additional fees. Extra services, which competitors might include as standard, can add to the overall expense. Some users have also experienced difficulties when trying to cancel services, which can lead to unexpected costs or administrative complications.
In our review, the initial affordability of IONOS is balanced by the long-term financial implications. For businesses that plan to scale and require more robust hosting solutions, the additional charges for enhanced services can accumulate over time. Despite these challenges, IONOS remains competitive in terms of value when compared to providers offering similar entry-level features. The pricing structure is clear during the initial phase, but potential customers must be cautious and fully understand the terms and conditions associated with renewals and add-ons.
Detailed billing transparency is an area where IONOS has room for improvement, and clearer communication on what costs to expect in the long run would benefit customers. For startups and small businesses that need to manage costs carefully, the initial low pricing can be a significant draw. However, businesses should conduct a thorough cost-benefit analysis and consider future needs when evaluating the overall pricing model.
Our analysis at HostDean indicates that while IONOS provides a competitive entry price, the long-term expenses should be factored into any decision-making process. In summary, IONOS’s pricing is attractive for newcomers but may become less favorable over time for customers who require additional services or wish to avoid higher renewal fees.
IONOS Support
Can you count on IONOS's support? Our opinion.
IONOS offers customer support that is accessible around the clock via phone and live chat. The company has invested in a multi-channel support system designed to cater to a diverse customer base. Many users appreciate the availability of support at any hour, which is essential for addressing issues that arise outside of normal business hours. The support team is generally courteous and professional, and several customers have praised the clarity and thoroughness of the responses received.
In particular, the phone support service is noted for its promptness in resolving technical issues and guiding users through troubleshooting steps. However, based on our interactions at HostDean with IONOS support, along with feedback from users across the internet, the support experience appears to vary widely depending on the type of query and the time of contact
Some customers have reported longer-than-expected response times when using email or live chat channels. This inconsistency in response times can be a drawback for users who require immediate assistance, especially during critical moments when website uptime is essential. Furthermore, if you decide to test the support service before signing up with IONOS, you’ll find that the live chat support is “temporarily unavailable.” This is because it’s restricted to current customers, leaving phone support as the only option for non-customers.
Another aspect that has attracted criticism is the reported difficulty in cancelling services. Users who have attempted to terminate their contracts sometimes encounter delays and a lack of clear guidance on the cancellation process. This issue can lead to frustration and has a direct impact on the overall customer support experience. In our assessment, while the support staff are knowledgeable and equipped to handle a wide range of issues, the variability in service delivery suggests that there is room for improvement in standardizing the support process.
Additionally, the support documentation and self-help resources provided on the website are helpful but could be more comprehensive. Detailed guides, video tutorials, and a more user-friendly knowledge base would benefit customers who prefer to resolve issues on their own. The overall support experience at IONOS is adequate for most users, but the occasional delays and challenges with administrative tasks such as service cancellation, are notable drawbacks. For customers who prioritize quick and efficient support responses, it may be beneficial to consider these factors carefully before making a long-term commitment.
Our tests at HostDean indicate that while many users have had positive experiences, the support service is not uniformly excellent across all channels. Continued efforts to streamline support processes and improve communication could significantly enhance the customer experience. The existing support structure lays a solid foundation, yet addressing the inconsistencies would help IONOS elevate its service further.
IONOS Features
Are IONOS's features impressive? Our hands-on review.
IONOS provides a wide array of features that cater to both novice users and experienced website administrators. The service offers a comprehensive control panel that simplifies website management, domain registration, email setup, and other essential tasks.
One of the strengths of IONOS is its extensive range of hosting options, from shared hosting and ASP.NET to cloud and dedicated server hosting with the availability of Windows hosting plans. This variety ensures that there is a suitable plan for different types of websites, whether they are personal blogs, small business sites, or more complex applications. A key feature that many customers appreciate is the inclusion of free SSL certificates and backup solutions, which add value to the hosting packages without incurring extra costs.
The control panel is designed to be intuitive and straightforward, reducing the learning curve for new users while still offering advanced options for experienced administrators. Additionally, IONOS provides a tool for one-click installations of popular content management systems, such as WordPress, called Click & Build, which simplifies the process of launching a website. For those looking to build a website from scratch, the integrated website builder offers a range of customizable templates and design options.
However, not all features meet the highest performance standards. For instance, the use of HDD storage on shared hosting and ASP.NET hosting plans has a noticeable impact on feature performance. While the feature set is comprehensive on paper, the underlying hardware limitations can result in slower load times and reduced responsiveness when using resource-intensive applications.
Some users have noted that the performance of the control panel and associated management tools can lag, particularly during periods of high traffic or when making significant changes to website configurations. Despite these issues, the overall feature set remains competitive when compared to other providers in the market.
The tools provided cover the basics needed for effective website management, including email hosting, domain management, and data backups. The availability of migration tools also helps new users transfer their websites from other platforms with relative ease. Furthermore, the range of plans allows customers to choose a solution that fits their specific needs and budget.
While advanced users may find that certain features are not as refined as those offered by specialized providers like managed WordPress hosts, for example, the all-in-one approach of IONOS remains attractive for many. The balance of basic and advanced features ensures that most users can find a plan that meets their requirements, even if some trade-offs exist regarding speed and responsiveness.
Overall, the feature set of IONOS is broad and sufficient for many standard website needs. Users benefit from the integration of essential tools and the simplicity of the control panel, although there is potential for improvement in optimizing these features for better performance on lower-tier plans.
IONOS User Reviews
Real-world experiences with IONOS. From real customers.
Your reviews are important and protected.

Good customer service
I had a great experience.
My rep was friendly and fun
My representative was friendly, delightful, knowledgeable and we laughed together.
With all due respect
With all due respect, I found out that the problem I'm having is happening to many of your customers and it won't sort emails in the format I choose, in my case to sort the unread at the top.
It took me four or five times to explain to the help person what the problem was. That's the first time in my 20 plus years as a customer that I had to explain a very simple thing over and over.
I then was placed on hold for several minutes. No problem. And the agent got back on the phone and told me that there was a widespread problem with this. I said fine. Can I give you some advice?
I told her: It would have been so easy for your IT people to tell agents there was this problem. Second, I said, you know, it might not have been a bad idea to notify your customers that some or all of them may have this problem.
I know the agent is trying their best and I really don't want to criticize how they handled the call. But it was really frustrating to try to be helpful. And I didn't feel like I was being listened to. So I decided to say goodbye and hang up.
The agent called back. And I said again. I was simply trying to be helpful. And then I asked her how could I have communicated the problem differently so that you would have understood it? And again, she wasn't listening. Or she didn't understand.
I've been one of your longest customers. The experiences I've had with customer service have been extraordinary. Always efficient. Always knowledgeable. Always willing to help. And I've told many people about the company, even before you bought or merged with one on one, I was a customer.
I'm being honest and I'm trying to be helpful. Promise me you won't fire this person, but maybe everybody could learn from this experience. It looks like now I'm getting notified of a problem. But it would have been so much easier if you'd notified your agents. Then my time calling in would have been maybe a couple minutes, but as it turns out, I had to spend a lot of extra time and many, many times trying to explain to the person what was wrong and it's just a simple sorting thing. I just never could understand why she didn't get it.
In closing, please don't fire that person. I know they're all trying their best. I have to be able to express myself without the fear that someone's gonna lose their job because it just wasn't that bad. But maybe it's the person that trains those people that's the problem.
I had an outstanding experience with Danicha
I had an outstanding experience working with Danicha Abalo at IONOS. From start to finish, she was patient, knowledgeable, and incredibly supportive. She took the time to understand exactly what I needed, walked me through every step clearly, and made sure I felt confident in the whole process.
What impressed me most was her professionalism mixed with real care. She didn't rush me, she didn't talk over me, she made sure I understood everything and that my business needs were fully covered. Representatives like Danicha are rare, and her service went beyond anything I expected.
Because of her, I feel secure and empowered moving forward with my project. IONOS is lucky to have her, and I highly recommend working with her to anyone who wants great support.
Thank you, Danicha! You were truly amazing!

I needed help fixing DNS settings. I learned how to manage this correctly. I had a hard time understanding my technician sometimes but he helped by spelling out some words. Kienth John P. from the messaging platform was very kind and respectful. I'm a very inquisitive person and he took time to answer each and every one of my questions. He was very professional and assisted me in an excellent way! I'm very pleased with the customer's service I received today!
No account after 4 weeks
Have you ever tried to open an account for 4 weeks?
No matter what I did, called them, emailed them but every time I got a different answer.
I could not open an account because their system kept refusing my address and they don't care to fix it. There is no sales supervisor, the security team never answered my emails or calls, it's only available during one timezone and they are so big that nobody can do anything for me to open an account.
Maybe in the future.

Terrible customer experience
Terrible customer experience, both by phone and email. I have been a customer for over 15 years and it keeps getting worse. As I am writing this I have been on hold for over 25 minutes just to be transferred from one department to another. Emails don't seem to be read properly and responses are totally off topic or irrelevant. Finally got someone nice and helpful but it really depends on who you get….

Easy to get started, great customer service
Ionos makes it really easy to set up webpage hosting, an e-commerce store, and link your domains (even if they aren't all hosted with Ionos).
Their customer service was amazingly quick, friendly, and efficient in helping me integrate my existing Google workspace accounts with the changes to my domain.

Jam is very competent
Jam is very competent as a Customer Service Agent. At a time when Customer Service is disappearing in this Country, it is like a breath of fresh air to have Jam support my need for documentation. YOU should give her the afternoon off, or buy her lunch tomorrow. James Rosenberg
Subscription Cancellation
I wanted to cancel my subscription and customer service was very helpful and quick to solve my issue.
Deceptive Billing Practices
I bought a web hosting plan from IONOS because they advertised a 1-year discounted hosting offer when you buy a domain. I bought the domain and signed up for the discounted hosting plan, which was advertised to include all ADD-ON features for free.
However, they suddenly started billing me after a couple months for 4 add-ons I never asked for. When I contacted them to cancel this feature, they told me it can't be cancelled for a whole year, something they never mentioned before. When I refused to pay for those addons they threatened to send my account to collections. They don't want to cancel the add-ons but they have the authority to delete my account and still charge me for that deleted account.
Here's their last email:
"If the invoice is overdue, we reserve the right, in accordance with our terms and conditions, to restrict or refuse our services and, if necessary, to terminate the entire contract without notice, even without prior suspension. You will then lose all associated services, including domains and email accounts."
This is misleading, unethical, unprofessional, and feels like a trap for customers. Please stay away from IONOS. They do not stand by what they advertise. They are crooks and thieves. Guys stay away from these crooks.
Good service
They were willing to reduce my rate.
Efficient service
Efficient, polite service.

IONOS FAQs
Your IONOS Questions, Answered by HostDean Experts
What type of hosting does IONOS offer?
IONOS provides a variety of hosting options, including shared hosting, Windows hosting, cloud hosting, VPS hosting, and dedicated servers. The range of services ensures that there is a solution for personal blogs, small business websites, and larger, more resource-intensive projects. The selection of plans allows users to choose the hosting type that best fits their needs and budget.
Each hosting type comes with its own set of features and performance levels. Users who require advanced functionalities or higher performance can opt for dedicated or cloud server options, while those with simpler needs may find shared hosting sufficient. The diversity in offerings allows customers to scale their services as their website grows.
How is the performance of IONOS hosting?
The performance of IONOS hosting depends largely on the chosen plan. Higher-tier plans, such as cloud and dedicated hosting, offer faster speeds and more efficient server response times due to modern hardware configurations like the use of NVMe SSD storage and more powerful processors. In contrast, shared hosting and ASP.NET hosting plans rely on HDD storage, which can lead to slower load times and longer time-to-first-byte.
You should evaluate your website's requirements before selecting a plan from IONOS or any other hosting provider. If your site expects high traffic or you run a resource-heavy application, opting for plans that include SSD storage or advanced hardware can help ensure a smoother experience. Overall, the performance of IONOS hosting is acceptable for many small to medium websites, but careful consideration is advised for those with higher speed demands.
What is the uptime guarantee from IONOS?
IONOS boasts high uptime percentages that are designed to ensure continuous website availability. The company uses multiple data centers and redundant network infrastructure to minimize downtime. This distributed approach helps mitigate issues and keeps websites online even during routine maintenance.
Most customers report minimal disruptions and are satisfied with the level of uptime provided. The provider also communicates clearly about scheduled maintenance, which helps users plan accordingly. For businesses that rely on a consistent online presence, the uptime guarantee is a significant benefit.
How does IONOS handle customer support?
IONOS offers 24/7 customer support through live chat and phone. The support team is generally available at all hours, and many users have experienced prompt and professional assistance. The company also provides a knowledge base with guides and tutorials to help users troubleshoot common issues independently.
However, some customers have reported that support response times can vary, particularly during periods of high demand. While the support staff are typically knowledgeable, there have been instances of delays and issues with communication. We at HostDean encourage you to explore all available support channels to find the most effective means of resolving your concerns.
What are the cancellation policies and fees associated with IONOS?
The cancellation policies for IONOS can be complex, and some users have experienced difficulties when trying to terminate their service. The process may involve multiple steps and require clear communication with the support team. In some cases, users have reported delays or obstacles during the cancellation process.
You need to review the terms and conditions before signing up for a plan. Understanding the cancellation policy in advance can help avoid potential issues later on. If any questions arise, we at HostDean recommend reaching out to customer support for clarification. Being aware of these details ensures that users can make informed decisions about their hosting plans.
